Cecilia and Louis Posluszny

Cecilia Posluszny, daughter of Blanche and Casimir Butkowski was born on Staten Island. She attended St. Adalbert’s School, St. Peter’s Girls High School, Hunter College and Purdue University.

Louis Posluszny, son of Mary and Ignatz Posluszny was born in Lackawanna, New York. He attended St. Adalbert’s School in Elmhurst, Long Island, Brooklyn Automotive High School, and Rock Island Institute. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Quartermaster in the 2476th Engineers in China, Burma, and India Theater.

Cecilia and Louis followed in her parents footsteps in St. Adalbert’s Church, Elm Park where her parents were married, she was baptized and Louis and Cecilia became Mr. & Mrs. Posluszny on April 27, 1947. The family continued with daughter Marie’s baptism, wedding and grandchildren’s baptisms. Cecilia and Louis have been active for over the past 50 years in the Mother’s Club, Holy Name Society, St. Adalbert’s Senior Citizens and Louis, as church usher.

Involved in veteran affairs, both are over 50 year members of Henry & Stanley Cichon Post and Auxiliary, American Legion, having served as Commander and President, respectively, and are still serving as officers. Cecilia has also served as American Legion Auxiliary County President and District President. Both are members and past officers of the Honor Society 40/8 and 8/40. Cecilia received the Sword of Hope Diamond Pin for her auxiliary cancer work.

Both are retirees – Cecilia from Sears and Roebuck and Louis from the New York City Transit Authority. He is a member of the Transit Retirees and Local ATU #726.

Cecilia also served as President of the St. Peter’s Girls High School Alumnae Association.

Lifelong members of the Polish National Alliance, both are active members serving as officers in T. Kosciuszko Lodge #510 and Council #102 on Staten Island. Cecilia also has served as an officer in Women’s Division 7 Councils-N.Y.C. and District III Commissioner, as part of the National Board. In 1979, she served as vice chairman of the National Convention of the Polish National Alliance held in Washington, D.C. On Staten Island, they are also responsible for upkeep of the Kosciuszko/Pulaski Monument in Silver Lake Park. Through the P.N.A., both are involved in the Polish-American Congress, Downstate, N.Y., aiding in Polish causes and endeavors. Cecilia is a past president of the New York Fraternal Congress. They are both members of the friends of the College of Staten Island and represent the P.N.A. in their scholarship fund. She received the Dolphin Award from former college president E. Volpe.

In their community, they are members of the Livingston Community Association, Project Hospitality, Bayley Seton AARP, Snug Harbor and S.E.R.V.E.

For over 50 years they have been active with the Pulaski Parade Committee on Staten Island and the General Casimir Pulaski Committee, N.Y.C. on Staten Island. Cecilia participated in the first parades as a student of St. Adalbert’s School during the pastorship of Msgr. Joseph Brzoziewski. They have both worked together over the years, helping run affairs, arrange and participate in the parade and Miss Polonia contests.

Cecilia was also active in assisting Msgr. Stanley Malinowski of St. Stanislaus Church in New Brighton, with the church’s financial reports. At St. Stanislaus she founded the Millennium Supplementary School, which taught American born Polish children the Polish language, customs, tradition and dances. She is now a member of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Professional Women’s Association.

In 1969, the Staten Island Advance honored Cecilia, as a S.I. Advance Woman of Achievement, for her community, veteran and Polish contributions.

But first and foremost, it has always been their endeavor to help and promote the good and welfare of others.

Their greatest pride is being parents of daughter Marie Costa, and grandparents of June Marie Costa and Jennifer Marie Costa.
